WHAT IS RAGGING

Ragging involves a range of behaviors that can include verbal abuse, physical punishment, forced acts, and sexual harassment, all of which are designed to humiliate and intimidate new students. It can occur in any form, from harmless jokes to brutal physical and mental abuse. Ragging is often carried out by seniors in the institution who exert their power over juniors, but in some cases, it is initiated by groups of students with an underlying desire to assert dominance.

CAUSES OF RAGGING

  • Peer Pressure: Seniors may force newcomers to partake in ragging rituals due to peer pressure or a misguided belief that it is part of college culture. This “tradition” is often passed down from one batch to the next.

  • Power Dynamics: Ragging often arises from an imbalance of power where seniors see themselves as having more control and status within the institution, which they assert by subjecting juniors to humiliation.

  • Lack of Awareness: In many instances, students may not fully understand the extent of the harm ragging can cause. What is initially seen as a “fun activity” may lead to lasting psychological scars for the victim.

  • Institutional Inaction: In some cases, educational institutions may overlook ragging, either due to a lack of awareness, failure to act on complaints, or inadequate measures to curb the practice. This creates an environment where ragging becomes normalized and condoned.
